| The ideal binder
for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement provides strength
at the high end of service temperature while remaining
flexible at the low end of service temperature.
This change in properties with temperature is called
temperature susceptibility and the "ideal"
binder has low temperature susceptibility. Other
properties of an ideal binder are good adhesion,
good workability for placement, cost effective,
and "robust" in performing well even when
other construction parameters vary. Modification of asphalt with VECTOR® SBS
moves natural asphalt in the direction of the
"ideal" high performance binder described above.
The increased demands on today's pavements from
higher traffic levels (especially trucks) and
higher tire pressures from radial tires require
high performance pavement, such as can be
achieved using VECTOR SBS modified asphalt. The improved
thermal susceptibility and flexibility from SBS
modification addresses the major distresses affecting
HMA pavement including permanent deformation (rutting),
fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking. In addition,
with the higher viscosity of SBS modified binders,
thicker binder coatings can be achieved without
drain-off problems in Open-Grade Friction Courses
and Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixes.
Use of VECTOR SBS modification is beneficial
in surface treatments such as chip seals and microsurface.
Both emulsion and hot chip seals benefit from
the improved rheology and flexibility that provide
excellent chip retention through quick initial
chip embedment and resistance to "whip-off"
during the critical first winter. Improved high
temperature properties result in less bleeding
and flushing of binder, helping to maintain the
skid-resistance of the surface. Microsurface and
Slurry Seal systems benefit from improved viscoelastic
properties that can allow for increased lift thickness.
Highway crack and joint sealers are another application
area to which SBS brings benefits. SBS at moderate
concentrations can produce the desired properties
of resilience at low temperature, flow resistance
at high temperature, easy application, and good
adhesion to both HMA and concrete surfaces.
